MEDICAL CLINIC OPENING SOON IN PANAJACHEL
After much hard work and many unexpected
delays, the De Peña Family Medical Center will finally be opening in
Panajachel, Lake Atitlán, Guatemala in a few short weeks. The clinic
will focus not only on providing general medical care for the people
of Lake Atitlán, but also on assisting indigenous people who are unable
to provide for their health care. The clinic will be operated in conjunction
with The Dr. Louis & Victoria De Peña Foundation to help
children, families and people in crisis. All donations made to the clinic
will be utilized for urgently needed medical equipment and/or health
care for individuals who cannot afford medical service. Currently there
is a great need for an
X-ray machine, portable ultrasound and defibrillator. The nearest hospital
offering x-ray service and a defibrillator is located in Sololá, Guatemala
and is not strategically located for the people that live in the many
pueblos around Lake Atitlán. Often people have to come across the lake
in a boat to Panajachel, then access a public pickup truck for another
20 minute ride to Sololá. Emergencies dictating prompt and immediate
attention would be well served by having a more centrally located facility
offering x-ray service and a defibrillator. Future plans include the
addition of an auxiliary health care facility and children's home in
Santa Catarina Palopó. If you are planning on visiting beautiful Lake
